Former Oliver Springs and University of Tennessee standout and former Coalfield football coach Garry Kreis died early Monday morning after a long battle with cancer.

Kries retired in 2008 after 30 years of coaching the Yellow Jackets, including 21 years as head coach. He finished his career with 165 wins, 18 trips to the playoffs, half-a-dozen district and region championships (1990, ‘91, ‘94, ‘95, 2005 and 2006) and another dozen Morgan County titles to his storied Tennessee coaching career. He was also an assistant at Coalfield from 1979-86.
