With every team in District 4-A possessing at least two losses, every win is important for the Oliver Springs Bobcats, and Tuesday evening Tony Kegley’s squad ran their district mark to 5-5 with a 7-4 victory at Coalfield.
The Bobcats took control by scoring in each of their first four at bats in building a 6-0 lead after 3 1/2 innings of play. Coalfield tried to rally late, as they closed to within 6-4 after six innings, but the Jackets would get no closer as Oliver Springs added an insurance run in the top of the seventh inning.
Oliver Springs got off to a great start when starting pitcher Keith Roberts tripled to start the game. His courtesy runner, Dakota Thompson, would score on a ground ball from Elijah White to give the Bobcats the early lead.
Oliver Springs added two runs to their lead in the second inning. Caleb Armetta walked to start the inning and he scored on a single from Austin Jones. Jones scored later on a ground ball from Trevor Green to make the score 3-0.
Oliver Springs’ leadoff batter reached safely and scored again in the top of the third inning. This time Taylor Coleman singled, stole second and scored off a Tanner Turpin single to make the score 4-0.
The Bobcats made it 6-0 with a pair of runs in the top of the fourth inning. Luke Miller and Green reached safely to start the inning and both would come around to score with Roberts and Coleman driving in the runs.
Coalfield scored their first run of the contest in the bottom of the fourth inning, and then the Jackets tacked on three runs in the sixth to pull within 6-4.
Oliver Springs answered the threat with a run in the seventh inning. A pitch hit Jones with two outs and he worked his way around the bases on wild pitches to make the score 7-4.
Coalfield went down in order in the bottom of the seventh inning.
Turpin (2-4, 1 RBI), Jones (2-3, 1 RBI, 2 runs) had multiple hits on the day for the Bobcats while Roberts (CG, 9 hits, 3 walks, 8 Ks) picked up the win on the mound.
Oliver Springs will look to pick up two more district wins this week when they take on Wartburg. The Bobcats will host the Bulldogs on Monday before traveling to Wartburg on Tuesday.
