Westel resident Ann Pickel Harris got an earful from Roane County Commissioner George Nelson when she spoke ill of TVA at a recent work session.

“Hey, lady! How do you know there’s arsenic over at the TVA?” Nelson asked.

“Because the test said that, sir,” she responded. “You should have read it.”

Nelson disagreed.

“I live out there,” he said.

The work session was held so officials from Roane, Cumberland and Morgan counties could hear Alternative Engineering Solutions proposal to build a plant at the Plateau Partnership Park.

The park is a joint venture between the three counties. The proposed plant would turn garbage into electricity.

The park is in Cumberland and Morgan counties. Some residents from the Westel community, which is in Cumberland, attended the work session and voiced concerns about the proposed garbage plant.

Nelson interrupted Harris when she made a comment about arsenic at the TVA Kingston Fossil Plant.

“You people just —” Nelson said, as he threw up his hands.

Harris expressed dismay about Nelson’s “Hey, lady!” comment when asked about it after the meeting.
