Area teachers will have an opportunity for the third year to receive a little schooling themselves this summer in the Educators in the Workplace Lunch and Learn program.

The program of The Roane Alliance, Innovation Valley Inc. and other area Chambers of Commerce is open to educators from Roane, Blount, Knox and Loudon counties and Oak Ridge.

“A dozen area businesses are opening their doors for teachers and guidance counselors to meet with business people in a workplace setting, said Allen Lutz, The Roane Alliance’s education and workforce development specialist.

Most visits will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., with lunch provided by the hosting company.

“Representatives from the businesses will provide information about their company, its workplace culture and discuss ways to connect what the students learn in the classroom and what is required in the workplace,” Lutz said. “There will also be a tour of the business.”

Four Roane County businesses will start off the visits: Capstan in Rockwood on June 8, Roane Medical Center in Harriman on June 9, Oak Ridge National Laboratory on June 15 and Toho Tenax in Rockwood on June 16.

“This program is beneficial for both the businesses and the teachers,” said Leslie Henderson, The Roane Alliance’s president/CEO.

“Teachers benefit by learning ways to show students the relevance of what they teach in the classroom to workplace expectations and requirements,” she explained. “Businesses benefit by helping develop a skilled workforce in the future and making connections with teachers to further support the education of that workforce.”

Other visits in June and July will be with 21st Mortgage, Covenant Health, Gerdau Ameristeel, Molecular Pathology Laboratory Network, Nyrstar Mining, Standard Aero, Seco Tools and the Y-12 National Security Complex.

Educators may register for one or more visits at http://eiwpteachers.eventbrite.com, using the password “teach.” Participation in the program is free for educators. The deadline to register is May 28.

Educators in the Workplace is one of several annual activities provided through the Alliance’s “Education Matters!” initiative. It is funded by the Knoxville Oak Ridge Innovation Valley, a regional economic development organization.
