A deluge of rain could not stop Atomic City Aquatics Club swimmers recently at the Chattanooga Invitational Long Course Meet.
Propelling through the outdoor pool, ACAC swimmers swam personal bests in more than half their races. The team was led by first time Southeastern qualifiers Madi Cottrell (50 Breast), Lawrence Zhang (50 Breast, 50 Free, 50 Back), Harrison Whitson (50 Breast, 50 Free, 100 Free), Natalie Ingle (50 Free) and Maggie Sumner (50 Free).
“It’s impressive that many swimmers had fast times at such an early time in the season, all before we ever stepped foot outside for long course training. Several swimmers made Southeastern cuts for the first time. The current from the rain apparently carried us swiftly down the pool for a great performance,” Coach Mike Bowman said.
Some familiar names also made Southeastern cuts. These included Chandler Ott (200-Breast, 50 Free), Margaret Stansberry (200 Breast, 50 Free), Ben Thomas (200 Breast), Jack O’Connor (50 Free), Sam Schechter (50 Free), Sean O’Connor (50 Free, 100 Free, 200 Free, 100 Back, 100 Fly), Paul Schechter (50 Free), and Kent Eldreth (100 Breast, 200 Fly).
Jonathan Goss, Grant Groscost, Cory Hale, Abigail Hinsley, Jacob Hinsley, Loki Hondorf, and Kalie McMahan all came home with top four finishes. Eight-year-old Mason Fischer went toe-to-toe with the 10-year-olds, bringing home a third place and three other top seven finishes.
