Astronomy group to get a virtual tour of Chicago planetarium

Oak Ridge’s ORION astronomy club will be given a virtual tour of Chicago’s Adler Planetarium at its next meeting.

The group will meet at 7 p.m. Sept. 4 in the Grove Theater at 123 Randolph Road, Oak Ridge.

Noah Frere, president of the Smoky Mountain Astronomical Society and ORION’s treasurer and newsletter editor, will give the virtual tour that includes the planetarium’s sky theaters; Astronomy & Culture exhibit; displays of ancient technical books with diagrams of centuries-old astrolabes, telluriums and planetarium machines; and many old telescopes together with exhibits in modern advances in cosmology.

ORION has supported educational and astronomy activities in Oak Ridge and surrounding region since 1974.

Programs it supports include the free public star gazes at Tamke-Allan Observatory in Roane County on the first and third Saturday of the month.
