The Midway Middle School Green Wave successfully defended their Clinch Valley Conference Class A title with a 56-18 demolition of Sunbright Thursday night at Midway.
Despite an anxious start to the game, the Green Wave had control throughout the game. Midway led 24-6 at the end of one period of play and 40-6 by halftime.
Midway had defeated Sunbright twice during the regular season, 40-34 at Midway and 40-22 at Sunbright. However, after last year’s championship when they squeaked by Oakdale 14-0 after beating the Eagles handily during the regular season, the Green Wave made sure that would not happen again.
Still there was some apprehension when Sunbright’s Dillon Woodward returned the opening kickoff 51 yards to give the Tigers a 6-0 lead just 14 seconds into the game.
Midway’s fears didn't last long as Colton Garrett scooped up the ensuing kickoff and returned it 29 yards to the Sunbright 24. From there, Skyan Lyle needed only one play to score.
Zane Moser ran in the two-point conversion to give the Green Wave the lead at 8-6.
After a Sunbright punt, Midway needed only three plays before Lyle swept right and sprinted 61 yards for the touchdown.
Moser again added the two-point run for a 16-6 lead with 3:33 left in the first quarter.
Sunbright fumbled on their next possession then Midway scored five plays later on an 18-yard run from Lyle.
Lyle hit Gabe Moore on the two-point conversion to put Midway up 24-6 with 29.7 seconds left in the first quarter.
The Green Wave scored twice more in the second quarter.
The first score came when Lyle took a double reverse pitch and raced 51 yards into the end zone.
Lyle then hit C. J. Huff for the two points and a 32-6 lead for the Green Wave.
Midway's Devin Cheatham recovered the short bouncing kickoff, and then the Green Wave needed only one play to score as Moser swept right, but reversed field completely and out ran everyone for a 47-yard touchdown.
Lyle again hit Huff for the two-point conversion and a 40-6 lead with 5:55 left in the second quarter.
The Green Wave received the second half kickoff and were driving again when Lyle fumbled at the 12 with Sunbright recovering.
Even the fumble worked out as Midway recorded a safety three plays later to make the score 42-6.
Midway fumbled the ball away on the ensuing possession, but this turnover cost the Green Wave as Sunbright’s Alex Trent returned the fumble 70 yards for the touchdown.
The two-point try was no good to make the score 42-12.
Midway responded quickly. On the first play after the kickoff, Moser swept left and ran almost untouched to the end zone for the touchdown.
Lyle threw incomplete on the two-point try to leave Midway up 48-12.
Sunbright put together good drive after the kickoff and scored their third touchdown of the day.
Levi Daniel scored from five yards out for the Tigers to cut the lead to 48-18 with 5:04 left in the game.
Even with all the Green Wave starters on the bench, Midway’s sixth and seventh graders took the field and scored another touchdown with Huff scoring from 20 yards away.
Hunter Hester pounded in the two-point run to put Midway on top 56-18.
Midway piled up 346 yards offense on the day with 334 yards coming on the ground. Lyle led the ground attack with 198 yards and four TDs on 11 carries while Moser added 79 yards and two TDs on eight carries.
