The Rockwood Lady Tigers had one big inning on offense and one bad inning on defense Monday in their 2011 season opener at McMinn Central.

Unfortunately for the Lady Tigers, the bad outweighed the good as Rockwood dropped a 5-3 decision to the Lady Chargers.

Rockwood’s bad inning came in the bottom of the second as McMinn Central scored all five of their runs.

Rockwood responded in the top of the third inning as Lexi Monroe, Haley Turpin and Vida Harp all scored runs in the frame to make the score 5-3. Turpin, Harp and Monroe also drove in the runs in the frame.

Rockwood actually out hit the Lady Chargers on the day, 7-5, and both teams picked up three walks, but the Lady Tigers only error of the day led to three of McMinn Central’s five runs being unearned.

Turpin (2-3, 1 RBI, 1 run), Harp (2-3, 2 2B, 1 RBI, 1 run), Shelby Brackett (2-3) and Monroe (1-3, 1 RBI, 1 run) had hits on the day for Rockwood.

Turpin took the loss on the rubber despite tossing six strong innings. Turpin allowed only five hits and three walks on the day while striking out three.

Rockwood played Monterey Tuesday and the Lady Tigers close out the week with a home game Thursday against Cumberland County and a road trip to Huntsville Friday to take on Scott.
