Bobcats close out 2012 with victory

The Oliver Springs Bobcats finished off the 2012 portion of their schedule last week with a seventh place finish in the 2012 Jon Loden Holiday Classic at Midway.

The Bobcats opened play with a 55-45 loss at the hands of Portland and then Tony Ingram’s squad suffered a 69-52 loss against Monterey. Oliver Springs did end the tournament on a positive note after knocking off Oakdale, 74-48.

The Bobcats return to the court on Friday when they travel to Sunbright in a District 4-A match-up.

Game 1

The Bobcats played well at times in the opener, but a late Panthers run allowed Portland to pick up the 10-point victory.

The first half was a nip-and-tuck affair with Oliver Springs holding a 13-12 lead after eight minutes of play and a 28-25 lead at halftime.

The third period opened well for the Bobcats as their lead stood at 36-29 midway through the period, but then the Bobcats offense went ice cold. The Panthers scored the final seven points of the third period and then opened the final period with a 9-4 run to take a 49-40 lead.

Oliver Springs never recovered from the 16-4 run as the Panthers went on to the 55-45 victory.

Kane Simpson led Oliver Springs on the night with 13 points while Matt Henley added 10.

Corbin Keen (17 points), Cody Jenkins (13 points) and Javaris Rippy (13 points) scored in double figures for the Panthers.

Game 2

Monterey scored the first 23 points and never looked back in picking up a 69-52 victory over the Bobcats.

The run allowed the Wildcats to take a 23-2 lead after eight minutes of play and Oliver Springs was never able to close within 15 points the rest of the evening.

Logan Jones led Monterey to the win with 22 points while Jared Phillips added 17.

Ten Bobcats scored on the night with Henley scoring 10 points to lead the way.

Game 3

After a poor showing against Monterey, Oliver Springs bounced back with a 74-48 victory over Oakdale.

The Bobcats led 20-12 after one period of play then Oakdale scored the first basket of the second quarter to make the score 20-14, but that’s when the Bobcats put together a run that ended the game by halftime. Oliver Springs ended the period on a 26-1 run to make the score 46-15 at halftime.

Simpson (11 points) and Henley (10 points) led the way for Oliver Springs in the first half.

The second half would see the Eagles play much better, but they couldn’t make a dent in Oliver Springs’ lead as the Bobcats went on to the 26-point victory.

John Simms led Oliver Springs on the night with 18 points while Simpson (13 points) and Henley (10 points) also scored in double figures.

Jonah DeVaney led Oakdale with 13 points while Matt Abernathy and Tyler Steinmetz added 10 each.
