After dropping their first District 4-A game at home against Oakdale on Dec. 10, the Oliver Springs Bobcats couldn’t afford to drop another district home game this early in the season.
They wouldn’t as Tony Ingram’s squad downed Jellico 71-58 Tuesday evening to improve to 6-7 overall and 1-1 in district play.
Tuesday’s game was high scoring from the beginning, but in the end Oliver Springs’ depth might have been the difference as the Bobcats played well in both the second and fourth quarters.
The first quarter was played to pretty much a draw as the Bobcats led 16-15 after eight minutes of play.
Aaron Noe had a big first quarter for Oliver Springs with seven points. Austin Nunley matched that number for the Blue Devils.
Oliver Springs caught fire in the second quarter. Behind 10 points from Collin Moss along with five each from Noe and Shelby Morgan, the Bobcats outscored Jellico 26-16 in the frame to take a 42-31 lead at halftime.
The third period would be rough for Ingram’s squad. The Bobcats scored just eight points in the frame and that allowed Jellico to pull within 50-46 heading into the fourth quarter.
Oliver Springs, however, caught fire again down the stretch. Taylor Murray scored seven points and Morgan added six in the final frame as the Bobcats handed Jellico its first district loss of the season.
Several Bobcats put up great numbers on the night. Noe (18 points, 7 rebounds), Moss (17 points), Murray (17 points, 9 rebounds) and Morgan (15 points, 10 rebounds) all scored in double figures on the night.
Hunley (18 points, 4 steals), Justin Bowlin (16 points, 5 assists, 6 steals) and Logan Cross (10 points) scored in double figures for Jellico.
Oliver Springs (71) Moss 17, Noe 18, Murray 17, Johnson 2, Morgan 15, Miller 2.
The Lady ’Cats have dominated Jellico over the years, but the Lady Devils gave Oliver Springs quite a scare Tuesday night before the Lady ’Cats pulled away down the stretch for a 35-28 victory.
Neither team did much offensively in the first half. The score would be tied 7-7 after one period of play then the Lady ’Cats took a 16-12 lead at halftime.
Rachel Griffith scored seven points for Oliver Springs in the first half while Natasha Taylor scored five for the Lady Devils.
The third quarter was a rough one for the purple gold. Griffith scored six points in the frame, but no other Oliver Springs played scored as Jellico took a 24-22 lead into the final period of play.
Oliver Springs, however, turned up the heat defensively with the game on the line. The Lady Devils scored just four points in the frame as the Lady ’Cats rallied for the seven-point victory.
Griffith led all scorers on the night with 19 points.
Taylor paced the Lady Devils with 11 points.
The Bobcats and Lady ’Cats hit the floor again tonight (Friday) at home when they take on Clarkrange.
Friday’s game will be their last before Christmas. After Christmas, the Bobcats will be playing in the 2013 Harriman Christmas Classic while the Lady ’Cats will be playing in a Christmas tournament at Fulton.
