After a stunning upset of at Oneida in the opening round of the District 4-A Tournament, the Oliver Springs Bobcats dropped a 43-31 decision against Sunbright Saturday night in the district semifinals.
Both teams struggled offensively early on, but this seemed to be the theme for this game.
Kyle Gunter and Tyler Seabolt would combine for all seven points in the opening quarter for the Tigers while John Simms and Matt Henley combined for five of the ‘Cats six first quarter points with Sunbright holding a 7-6 lead after eight minutes of play.
The Tigers went on a 7-0 run over the first five minutes of the quarter to gain control and take a 14-6 lead with 2:40 remaining in the half. Sunbright, however, struggled on offense the rest of the half and allowed the ‘Cats to stay close. Oliver Springs would close the half on a 5-2 run to cut the Sunbright lead to 16-11 at the break.
Oliver Springs would not go quietly against the Tigers. The ‘Cats just never found a rhythm on offense, but the Tiger defense had a lot to do with that.
The ‘Cats would close to within six points at 31-25 with 4:40 remaining in the game, but would never get any closer as Sunbright would advance to the district championship game with a 43-31 win.
Simms and Henley each had eight points and four rebounds for the Cats. Freshmen Taylor Murray led the ‘Cats on the glass with eight rebounds.
Senior Kyle Gunter had 18 points, three rebounds and three assists to lead Sunbright. Skyler Bunch added eight points and eight rebounds. Seabolt had six points, but dominated the glass with 10 boards.
