After pulling off a shocker in the opening round of the District 4-A Tournament over No. 3 seed Oneida, the Oliver Springs Bobcats were hoping to add another chapter to their Cinderella run Tuesday night against Coalfield in the District 4-A consolation game.
However, their golden carriage would turn into a pumpkin as the Yellow Jackets swarmed past the 'Cats for a 55-46 win.
Coalfield started off fast and furious on a 9-3 swing to cruise to an early 13-7 lead.
Nathan Johnson (6 points) led the Coalfield offense while Kane Simpson (5 points) led the Bobcats.
Both teams scored eight points in the second period to give Coalfield the 21-15 halftime lead.
In the third period, Coalfield led 34-24 at one stretch, but the 'Cats clawed back into contention with an 8-2 run to pull within 36-32 with one final period to go.
Hayden Ariaz (10 points) emerged as the new leading scorer for Coalfield at that point with Simpson (11 points) still leading the ‘Cats.
The offense picked up in the final period with Coalfield eventually pulling away for the 55-46 win.
The 'Cats had a 9-6 tilt in team steals, but where Coalfield won the game was by taking Oliver Springs to "boarding school" with a 35-20 tilt on the boards.
Ariaz (23 points, 5 boards) led the Coalfield scoring brigade while Ryan Hill pulled down 12 boards.
Oliver Springs was led by Simpson (14 points), Matt Henley (11 points), and Markus Miller (8 points). Taylor Murray (6 boards) had a strong showing for the 'Cats as well.
