Bobcats splits with Bulldogs

There wasn’t a lot of drama at Oliver Springs Middle School Thursday night as the Oliver Springs Lady Bobcats and Wartburg Bulldogs cruised to easy wins.

The Lady ’Cats took the floor first and shook off a slow start on their way to a 51-19 victory over the Lady Bulldogs.

The final game of the evening was close for a half, but Wartburg dominated the third period of play on their way to a 40-21 victory.

Girls Game

Oliver Springs led from wire-to-wire Thursday in picking up a 32-point victory.

The Lady ’Cats scored the first five points of Thursday’s game and would lead 7-5 after six minutes of play.

The second quarter would see the Lady ’Cats start to pull away. Oliver Springs outscored Wartburg 16-6 in the period to take a 23-11 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Kinley Green (11 points), Taylor Bradshaw (6 points) and Morgan Hackworth (6 points) combined for all 23 points in the first half for Oliver Springs.

The third quarter was another big period for Oliver Springs as they outscored the Lady Bulldogs 12-4 in the frame to take a commanding 35-15 lead into the final period of play.

Green had a big quarter for the Lady ’Cats, burying two three-pointers and scoring eight total points.

Oliver Springs added 12 points to their lead in the final period. Keeley McDonald led the charge with seven points.

Green (19 points, 3 steals) and Hackworth (12 points, 6 steals) led Oliver Springs on the night. Lindsey Buck led the Lady ’Cats with six assists while Bradshaw had five rebounds.

Haylee Luttrell scored seven points to lead Wartburg. McKayla added a game-high six rebounds.

Boys Game

Oliver Springs stayed within striking distance for the better part of two periods Thursday, but a 5-0 Wartburg run to end the half followed by a 12-0 third period for the Bulldogs put the game away.

Wartburg started strong, scoring the game’s first eight points and leading 12-2 after one period of play.

Dillon Fountain (8 points) and Austin Hambright (4 points) combined for all of Wartburg’s points in the opening quarter.

Oliver Springs, however, scored the first seven points of the second quarter to pull within 12-9, but the Bulldogs scored the final five points of the half to make the score 17-9 at intermission.

Bobby Farr led the way for the Bobcats in the first half with five points.

Wartburg put the game away in the third quarter. The Bulldogs got eight more points from Fountain to take a 29-9 lead into the final period of play.

The Bobcats did win the final period 12-11 to make the final score 40-21.

 Fountain (21 points, 8 rebounds, 6 steals), Hambright (8 points, 6 rebounds) and Kirk Harlan (7 points, 11 rebounds, 6 assists, 4 steals) led Wartburg on the night while Bobby Farr (10 points, 5 steals) paced the Bobcats.

Oliver Springs returns to action Monday when they host Spring City. The Bobcats will be at Coalfield next Thursday.
