Calling it a career: Miles helped people feel better for almost 50 years

Mary Miles walked through the front doors of Harriman City Hospital on Dec. 30, 1963, and hasn’t left since.
Now, nearly 50 years later, Miles has decided to hang up her uniform and retire.
Through those years, she has watched the hospital that evolved into Roane Medical Center grow from a small community hospital into a progressive medical center.
“I’m a Harriman native, and I wanted to give back to my community, so I decided to get a job at the hospital,” Miles said. “I never imagined I would still be here today. The hospital has been my home away from home.”
From the beginning Miles’ life has revolved around the hospital. She was born there, and she met her husband there.
Her two children were born there, as was her grandchild.
In honor of Miles, Roane Medical Center employees gathered to celebrate her 48 years of service to the hospital.
Miles was honored with a commemorative plaque.
“Mary is a great example of the dedicated employees we have working at Roane Medical Center,” noted Jim Gann, president and chief administrative officer.
“She comes in with a smile on her face and a willingness to help others, and she has done so for a very long time.”
Miles served as the health unit coordinator for the hospital. She assisted the nursing department, and her various duties included scheduling tests, diagnostic procedures and doctor’s appointments for patients.
“Mary has been a great help to the nursing department,” said Lynda Sallee, Roane Medical Center’s chief nursing officer.
“She knows the ins and outs of all we do, and she will be greatly missed,”
Miles’ last day on the job was Feb. 6.
