With a strong night from the starting five, the Crusaders of Calvary Baptist were able to hold on for a hard fought 51-47 victory over Concord Christian.
The first quarter saw the Crusaders getting on the scoreboard early and often. Calvary, with assists from Paul Plemons to teammates Malachi Blake, Chase Roberts, Brandon Parton and Andrew Booth, shot more than 50 percent from the floor in the quarter.
Roberts and Blake were hot from the outside while Booth maintained the paint and controlled the boards.
Defense was also strong for the Crusaders as they led 16-7 at the end of the first quarter.
The second quarter saw both teams pick up the pace on defense.
The Concord duo of Josh Arnold and Josh Davis did provide and offensive spark while Plemons made his way through the lane for a couple of key baskets. Roberts also chipped in a late three-pointer to give Calvary a 24-14 lead at halftime.
The third and fourth quarters were an offensive show for both Calvary and Concord Christian.
Davis and Arnold stayed hot for Concord along with Jacob Crox chipping in. Blake, Roberts, Booth and Brandon Parton would score well for the Crusaders from both outside and inside. Plemons kept the offense running in tune both quarters as the Crusaders executed the offense to perfection.
In the end, Calvary was able to ward off a late charge from Concord and pick up the 51-47 victory.
Blake (13 points), Booth (11 points) and Roberts (11 points) scored in double figures for Calvary. Booth also pulled down a game-high 16 rebounds.
Arnold led Concord Christian with a game-high 18 points.
