Carmen Van Horn of Kingston recently became an AmeriCorps VISTA member.

Van Horn will serve as the VISTA veterans coordinator for Roane County and a Roane County United Way intern coordinating the Earned Income Tax Credit and Roane Alliance for Financial Independence programs.

“We are honored to have Carmen serving with us over the next year,” said Amy Harmon, United Way executive director.

“Her enthusiasm, dedication and commitment to serving others are an inspiration to others.”

Van Horn’s work with United Way will also support the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance program that provides free tax assistance for Roane Countians.

She holds an associate’s degree from Roane State Community College and is furthering her education in early childhood education.

She has volunteered with the Roane County Extension office for the past 10 years and has coordinated a support group for the Roane County Home Education Association for the past seven years.

Van Horn attends Kingston First Baptist Church, where she serves in the preschool department.

She and her husband, Shawn, have three sons, Mason, Cameron and Duncan.

Van Horn said she is excited about serving as an AmeriCorps VISTA member at the Roane County United Way because of its efforts to create long-lasting change that improves people’s lives.

VISTA, a national service program designed specifically to fight poverty, was founded in 1964 as Volunteers in Service to America.  VISTA members serve full time for a year in anti-poverty organizations and agencies throughout the nation.
