'Cats split with Tigers

-A A +A
By Brody Jones

Tuesday’s game between Oliver Springs and Sunbright was a slobber-knocker with Sunbright picking up a 49-47 victory.

However, there are certain moments in life that just transcend beyond sports and Tuesday provided one of those moments Oliver Springs senior John Simms, in a most selfless act, gave up his starting spot for special needs student Michael Payne. Words alone cannot describe the scene, and there wasn’t a dry eye in the gym for the ovation that Payne got when he was introduced and when he left the game.

As far as the game, Sunbright started off on a torrid 9-1 tear, but the ‘Cats clawed back into contention with a 7-0 surge to pull within 9-8 before the Tigers closed out the opening period with an 11-8 lead.

Aaron Noe (5 points) led the ‘Cats in the opening period with Ryan Hunter (3 points) leading the Tigers.

Sunbright was only able to pull out to a 21-17 halftime lead.

Noe (7 points) and Tyler Seabolt (8 points) were the leading scorers for their respective teams at halftime.

The ‘Cats stormed into the lead during the third period, but an off-balance Kyle Gunter three-pointer knotted things up at 35-35 going into the final period.

Both teams were neck and neck through much of the period, but a four-point swing down the stretch by Sunbright gave them a 49-45 lead.

The ‘Cats chopped the lead to 49-47, and got one last shot at the win, but it would not be their night as Sunbright escaped with a 49-47 win.

Sunbright was led by Seabolt (17 points, 9 boards, 5 assists) and Gunter (11 points).

Noe (12 points), Taylor Murray (9 points), Dakota Thompson (8 points), and Matt Henley (7 points, 7 boards) led the ‘Cats in defeat.

Sunbright (49) Seabolt 17, Gunter 11, Bunch 9, Bakker 5, Swint 4, Hunter 3.

Oliver Springs (47) Noe 12, Murray 9, Thompson 8, Henley 7, Simpson 6, Miller 3, Simms 2.

Girls Game

On senior night for the Oliver Springs Lady Bobcats, they beat the Sunbright Lady Tigers "Waffle-House style", smothering and covering them with tenacious defense and chopping them up with a lights-out offense en route to a 56-21 victory.

The first period was all Oliver Springs, taking the early 18-0 lead. Kaylee Morgan led all scorers in the opening period with five points.

A 12-6 run at one stretch of period number two helped the Lady 'Cats expand the lead to 30-6 before the Lady Tigers whittled the deficit down to 32-11 at the half.

Rachel Griffith (8 points) led Oliver Springs while Andrea Morgan (10 points) led the Lady Tigers.

A 15-6 swing in the third period gave Oliver Springs a commanding 47-16 lead going into the final period. Griffith (13 points) led the Lady 'Cats with Morgan (14 points) leading Sunbright.
