After pummeling Norwood in their season opener, 40-0, the Cherokee Yellow Jackets made it 2-0 recently with a 50-6 victory over Wartburg.
Cherokee’s offense was unstoppable in the victory as the Yellow Jackets scored on all seven possessions.
“Overall we played a good game,” Cherokee head coach Brian Pankey said. “Offensively we moved the ball well and defensively we did a good job against their spread offense. They like to throw it a lot and we played a lot of man-to-man defense and bumped their receivers.”
Cherokee started fast Thursday as FB Rhett Jones took the first play from scrimmage and raced 59 yards for a touchdown. Malcolm Lane added the two-point conversion as the Jackets held an 8-0 lead just 14 seconds into the contest.
Cherokee’s next drive was a short one. Starting on Wartburg’s 37 after a failed fourth down attempt by the Bulldogs, the Jackets needed just four plays to score with Jones finding the end zone from 21 yards out.
Cherokee’s two-point try failed, leaving the score 14-0 with 4:11 left to play in the opening period.
Cherokee also scored on their next possessions as they drove 36 yards in seven plays with Austin Davis finding the end zone from six yards out.
QB Paul Bolden hit TE Brett Plemons on the conversion to give the Jackets a 22-0 lead with 7:55 left in the first half.
Wartburg’s offense picked up their first two first downs of the evening on their next possession, but Cherokee’s defense kept them out of the end zone thanks to an interception and 19-yard return from Lane.
Cherokee’s offense then drove 53 yards in three plays with Lane scoring from 17 yards out to make the score 28-0 with 3:07 left in the first half.
The Jackets found the end zone one more time before halftime as Davis capped a two-play, 42-yard drive with a run of 38 yards.
Bolden hit Cody Mitchell on the conversion to make the score 36-0 with 44.5 seconds left in the first half.
The second half was played with a continuos running clock, but the Jackets still found time to find the end zone on two occasions.
Cherokee’s first score came on a 24-yard run from Jones. Bolden ran in the conversion to make the score 44-0 with 4:31 left in the third period.
Cherokee’s final score came when Bryce Woody capped a three-play, 24-yard drive with a 16-yard run that made the score 50-0 with 7:05 left in the contest.
Wartburg avoided the shutout when Jacob Carroll capped an eight-play, 55-yard drive with a one yard run.
Cherokee finished the evening with 270 yards rushing on 21 attempts. Jones led the way with 141 yards and three touchdowns on only six attempts.
The Jackets did not attempt a pass.
Wartburg amassed 78 yards total offense on 43 plays. Carroll led the way with 38 yards rushing on five attempts and he also completed 8 of 13 passes for 38 yards.
Cherokee looks for their third win of the season when they travel to Midway on Thursday.
