When Jason Wilson starred in baseball at Coalfield back in the early 1990’s, his teams always won district championships. He is starting to get that tradition back going again. After winning the 2007 District 4-A Tournament in his first season as Coalfield skipper, he has led the Jackets to the 2008 District 4-A regular season crown.

Coalfield earned the title with a sweep over rival Oliver Springs last week.

“It feels good to get back to where Coalfield baseball used to be every year. We still have a lot of work to do and we haven’t peaked yet, so I hope we will be ready for next week’s tournament,” said Wilson.

Coalfield’s Cody (2 K’s) and Corey Key (2 K’s) combined to no-hit the Bobcats in an 11-0 win last Monday at O.S. In the win, Coalfield’s 13-hit parade was led by Logan Alley (3-4, 4 RBI). Cody Key (2 runs, 2 SB, 1 RBI), Matt Johnston (2 2B) and Austin Hicks (1 RBI, 1 run) each added two hits.

The Jackets followed it up with a hard-earned 10-8 win at home against the ’Cats last Tuesday.

The Jackets scored six runs in the first inning and never trailed in the two-run victory.

Matt Johnston (1 2B, 2 RBI, 1 run) and Cody Key (2 RBI, 1 run) each collected three hits to lead the Jackets at the plate. Corey Key (2 runs, 1 RBI), Logan Alley (1 2B), Brandon Evans (1 2B, 1 run, 1 SB) and Adam Doughty (2 RBI, 2 runs, 1 SB) each added two hits.

Matt Johnston (5 K’s) got the win, while Corey Key came on to close out the game and get the save.

Coalfield (14-11, 8-0 in District 4-A) will start their quest to repeat as District 4-A Champs Monday at home.
