Coats for Cold collection begins

The cooler temperatures of the last few days are a sure sign that fall is here.

That means Dennis Ferguson is worrying about how to keep folks warm, and he plans start collecting outerwear this week for the 17th annual Coats for the Cold campaign.

“Coats that we collect are to help those in Roane County that are in need,” said Ferguson, who continues to marvel at the public’s response to the drive he began in 1994. “They’ve helped me to help people stay warm, and I ask them to do it again this year.”

Coat collections will be Oct. 7-17.

Donations may be dropped off during normal business hours at Chase Drug stores in Midtown and Harriman, United Community Bank in Kingston, and Live and Let Live Drug Store in Rockwood.

“We need all coats,” Ferguson said, “but we’re always in need of kids’ coats and extra-large adult coats.”

The coats will be distributed to the public at a later date that has yet to be determined.
