A four-month investigation uncovered a local counterfeiting organization that cost more than $80,000 in losses for Roane County businesses.
“These were counterfeit checks,” Harriman Detective Daniel Schneider said.
Schneider only has estimates on how much the counterfeiting cost Roane County businesses, but he said the checks were passed in surrounding areas, as well.
An arrest in Cumberland County for passing counterfeit checks first made area detectives aware of the counterfeiting operation, Schneider said. That led to a search warrant.
