Five recent high school graduates from Roane County will begin their freshman year at Roane State Community College with a $500 Tennessee Scholars scholarship.

They are Alisa Barger of Midway High School, Jadah Gallaher of Harriman High School, Tavin Napier of Rockwood High School, Allison Taylor of Roane County High School, and Kara Young of Oliver Springs High School.

Students decide in eighth grade if they want to participate in the Tennessee Scholars program. Participating students then follow program requirements throughout their four years in high school. Winners were selected in a drawing at last month’s Tennessee Scholars breakfast.

Tennessee Scholars aims to increase the percentage of Tennessee high school graduates who are prepared for post-secondary education, the workforce or the military.

Roane State supports the initiative by offering scholarships in the college’s service area.

The $500 scholarship award is used to help pay for tuition, books or fees.
