Haley Goldston put on a show Tuesday evening as the Lady Devils ace tossed not one, but two shutouts in a doubleheader sweep at Tellico Plains.

The shutouts were needed as Harriman scored just one run in each of the two contests.

The sweep was huge for the Lady Devils as far as the District 3-A race is concerned. After splitting games with defending district champion Grace Christian Academy, the sweep improves Harriman’s district mark to 3-1 overall with the bulk of district play still on the schedule.

Game One

Goldston actually three a no-hitter with nine strikeouts in the first game of the day. Tellico Plains did have three base runners reach base with walks, but only one advanced past first base.

Harriman also had trouble hitting the ball as they picked up just two hits on the day.

Both hits came in the fourth inning. Goldston picked up the first hit with a bunt single and she would score on an error.

Marilyn Franklin also singled in the fourth inning, but was left on second.

Harriman received only two other base runners on the day. Darian Boyd reached on an error while Ivory Peddicord walked.

Game Two

The final game of the evening featured a little more offense as Harriman completed the sweep with another 1-0 victory.

Tellico Plains managed four hits in game two and put together two solid chances to score.

The first came in the second inning when Goldston hit a pair of batters. The best chance came in the fourth inning when the Lady Bears led off the inning with back-to-back singles, but both runners would be left stranded at the end of the inning.

Harriman’s run came in the first inning. Darian Boyd beat out a bunt single, moved to third on a single from Abigail Higgins and scored on a steal to give the Lady Devils what proved to be the game-winning run.

Harriman had two other base runners on the day. Peddicord led off the second inning with a double while Boyd picked up a two-out single in the third.

Goldston ended the game with six strikeouts.
