The Rockwood Tigers and Midway Green Wave usually don’t need any extra incentive to get fired up to play each other on the gridiron, but they will have just that Friday night as the winner of Friday’s game at Civitan Field will take home the Roane County Championship Trophy.

“It means a lot,” Rockwood head coach John Webb said. “It’s one of our goals this year and we need this game to keep our hopes of winning a district title as well.”

“I’ll make sure the boys know,” Midway head coach Joe Campbell added. “It’s a big game for us because it’s a rival and it’s a big district game for us.”

Friday’s game will be a contrast of styles as Midway’s offense is more up tempo while Rockwood’s game plan for years has been ground-and-pound. With those different styles, both coaches know time of possession will be a key stat Friday night.

“We’ve got to play very disciplined,” Campbell said. “They run the ball very well and they do a good job of controlling the clock. We’re going to have to do a good job when we have it because they do such a good job of limiting your possessions.”

“They’ve got the type team that can score in a hurry,” Webb added. “(Midway QB Shandon) Lyle is a kid that throws and runs very well plus they have some very athletic receivers that can catch the football. We’ve got to play solid defense and control the football. That’s pretty much our game plan every week though.”

Friday’s game takes on extra meaning considering TSSAA’s playoff system. Both teams can still earn home field advantage for the first round of the playoffs, and possibly a first round bye depending on how everything shakes out by the end of the season.

“It’s an important part of the equation,” Webb said on the importance of picking up as many wins as possible. “We’re still in the fight for a district title, but you need as many wins as possible for playoff seeding.”

“We’ve got a lot to play for,” Campbell added. “From what I understand that we can get a home game in the playoffs if we win one of the next two and we can possible get a bye if we with both of them.”
