The Midway Green Wave had won three games in the final seconds this season, but none of that would apply to Friday’s game against Grace Christian. The top ranked AA team in the state lived up to their billing and steamrolled the Green Wave 53-14 to remain unbeaten at 8-0 on the season.
Midway dropped to 5-2 overall 1-2 in District 3-A with the loss. Midway is still in excellent shape for a postseason berth, but another win or two in the last three games would help their chances and improve their seed. They will get their chance for win number six next Friday night when they host new district foe Meigs County.
Midway finishes the regular season with trips to Rockwood and Greenback.
Grace Christian scored their first two touchdowns in a span of 1:55. Both TDs came after picking off Midway quarterbacks Shandon Lyle and Mason Woody on the first two Midway passing attempts.
The Rams added a third touchdown before the quarter ended to lead 21-0.
If Grace was going to cut off Lyle through the air, they wouldn't stop him on the ground. Lyle piled up 233 yards rushing in the game.
The Rams scored again early in the second quarter and led 29-0 when Lyle and running back Austin Longmire took to the ground to punch in a touchdown with 2:45 left before halftime.
The 13-play, 80-yard drive, ended when Jonathan Beason slipped in for the touchdown. Lyle ran for 41 yards in the drive including a 23-yard pickup. Lyle completed a pass to Beason for five yards and hit Christian Moore for a 31 yard gain to the Grace 11.
Caleb Splawn added the point after.
Beason also ended the final Grace drive in the quarter picking off Devin Smith at the two yard line.
Grace continued the assault in the third quarter scoring twice to lead 45-7.
Smith passed for four touchdowns in the game and back Cameron Kuerschen added two more on the ground.
Midway scored their final touchdown when Lyle punched in from the four. The 70-yard drive was highlighted by a 43-yard pickup by Lyle and two nine-yard runs from Moore.
Splawn again added the point after.
Kuerschen ran in his second TD of the game with three seconds left in the third to put the Rams up 53-14.
Midway’s first chance to score came in the first quarter with Grace already leading 21-0.
The Green Waves drove to the Grace three, but Longmire was stopped for no gain on fourth-and-goal. Longmire kept the drive alive with a 22-yard run earlier in the possession.
