Harriman City Council approved changing the election date to August of even years to coincide with county elections.
“If we pass something this summer it won’t take effect on anybody until the 2014 election,” Mayor Chris Mason said.
That would mean any elected official with a term up in 2013 would have an extended term for 14 months.
The primary reason to want to change the dates would be the thousands in savings on election costs by doing it the same time as other elections.
Councilman Kenyon Mee mentioned that state legislators already support cities changing their election dates to even years.
