A unique student activity is part of Bowers Elementary School in Harriman.
Third-, fourth- and fifth-grade students make up a color guard.
“I guess this is the fourth year,” said Jerry Steele, a veteran who is in charge of teaching the drill team.
One reason Steele teaches the selected students in the program is to instill a sense of patriotism.
“I don’t think the kids get enough patriotism at home or at school as they should have,” he said.
