-A A +A
By Goose Lindsay, Sports Editor

After a week full of snow and ice, the Midway Green Waves and Harriman Blue Devils returned to action Friday night and it would be the Blue Devils and Lady Devils coming away with a big District 3-A sweep.

The first game of the evening would be a close one as Harriman held off the Lady Waves, 47-45.

The final game of the night wasn’t as close as Harriman cruised to a 62-44 victory.

Girls Game

Harriman led pretty much from start-to-finish in Friday’s contest, but some poor free throw shooting along the way led to some nervous moments down the stretch for Jim Cordell’s squad.

Harriman led 16-10 after eight minutes of play thanks to a quick start from Cree Moore and Haylee Goins. Moore scored seven points in the opening frame while Goins buried a trey and scored five points for Harriman.

Midway’s Hayley Roberson also had a big opening frame as she scored eight of her team’s 10 points in the first period.

The second quarter would see Harriman’s offense grind to a halt and that allowed the Lady Waves to pull within 21-18 at halftime.

Roberson and Allison Klinker combined for all eight of Midway’s points in the second period.

The third period was pretty much a draw, but Harriman did outscore Midway 12-10 in the frame, and those two points would prove to be important.

Goins led Harriman with four points in the frame while Dee Boyd and Olyvia Lunsford scored three each for the Lady Devils.

Roberson had another big period as she scored six points in the frame for Midway.

Free throws almost cost Harriman down the stretch as the Lady Devils couldn’t put the game away at the charity stripe. Harriman would hit only 8 of 21 free throws on the night compared to Midway making 19 of 23 from 15-feet away.

Lunsford, however, did hit a pair of late free throws to help Harriman secure the victory,

Lunsford led the way for Harriman on the night with 14 points while Moore and Goins scored 11 each.

Midway’s Roberson led all scorers on the night with 22 points while Klinker added 11.

Harriman (47) Gallaher 4, Boyd 5, Goins 11, Lunsford 14, Higgins 2, Moore 11.

Midway (45) Shultz 2, Roberson 22, Wiley 2, Barger 8, Klinker 11.

Boys Game

The weather might have been icy outside, but that did hamper Harriman’s shooting as the Blue Devils built a 24-point lead after three periods of play and then coasted home with the 62-44 victory.

Harriman started strong as the Blue Devils jumped out to a 22-13 lead after eight minutes of play.

Xavier Howard had a big opening period for the Blue Devils as he scored 10 points. Dimitrique Inman added six for the Blue Devils.

Sophomore Caleb Ruffner scored four points to lead the way for the Green Waves.

Midway’s defense played much better in the second period, but so did Harriman’s as the Blue Devils outscored Midway 9-5 in the frame to take a 31-18 lead at halftime.

Inman had scored seven of Harriman’s nine points in the second period while Josh Manning buried a three-pointer for Midway.

Harriman put the game away in the third period, as the Blue Devils won the period 15-4 to take a commanding 46-22 lead into the final period of play.

Howard had another big period for Harriman as he scored six points.

Midway did win the final period, 22-16, but it wasn’t enough to catch the Blue Devils.

Howard and Inman both scored 21 points to lead the way for Harriman while Manning (13 points) and Ruffner (10 points) scored in double figures for Midway.

Harriman (62) Howard 21, Inman 21, Upton 3, Gallaher 5, Austin White 4, Love 4, Alex White 3, Randolph 1.

 Midway (44) Clower 6, Ruffner 10, Jarvis 6, Parkison 6, Manning 13, Houser 3.
