Harriman sweeps Rockwood

The Harriman Blue Devils and Rockwood Tigers tipped off the 2008 portion of their schedule Friday night with a huge District 3-A contest between the two bitter county rivals.

The evening opened with the Lady Devils avenging an earlier loss to Rockwood as Jim Cordell’s squad picked up a 43-36 victory over the Lady Tigers.

The final game of the evening would see Harriman complete the regular season sweep of the Tigers as the Blue Devils picked up a 56-49 victory.

Both teams will hit the floor again Friday for big district contests as Harriman hosts Midway while Rockwood travels to Knoxville Christian School.

Girls Game

With both teams afflicted with shooting ailments, baskets became very imperative in the girls game. Harriman managed to hit the shots they needed to hit early on and hold off a Rockwood rally for a big 43-36 region victory.

Things started off with the Lady Devils coming out of the first period with an 8-5 lead. In the second period, Harriman used a 9-2 run at one stretch to give them a 22-10 lead at the half.

The Lady Tigers came roaring back in the third period with a 9-0 run at one point to pull them within five points, trailing 34-29 at the end of the third period. Harriman put the game away with a 9-7 tilt in the final period to escape with a 43-36 win.

Harriman won the boards by a 30-26 total, but lost the turnover battle 11-10 to Rockwood.

The Lady Devils were led in scoring by Kiersten Douglass with 16 points plus 12 boards and Jasmine Fuqua with 11 points plus eight boards.

Rockwood was led in scoring by Allison Breazeale with eight points, Karissa King with seven points plus six boards. Amanda Hackler with six points, and Kiley Gunter also had six points.

Kayla Evans also had five boards for Rockwood in the loss.

Boys Game

Rockwood came roaring out of the gate in the boys game, only to be burned in the end by the Blue Devils Friday night in a 56-49 victory for the blue team.

Things started off with the Tigers going on a 10-0 run to tip things off, but Harriman went on a 9-1 run to close the gap before Rockwood added three points to their lead to close the opening period leading 14-9.

The offensive firepower of both teams was showcased in the second period as Harriman out-dueled the Tigers by a 21-16 margin to have things deadlocked at 30-30 at the half.

The offensive attack of both teams cooled in the third period with Harriman taking a 38-35 lead at the close of the period. In the final period, Rockwood tried their hardest to come fighting back, but the Devils cast them aside for the 56-49 win.

Harriman won the boards by a 31-25 total and forced eight turnovers compared to three forced by Rockwood.

Harriman’s Cody McGill led all scorers with 15 points while Willie Collins had 14 points plus seven boards. Jarvis Inman had seven points along with Mitch Kyker for the Devils.

Jeff and Dimitrique Inman each had six boards in the victory.

The Tigers were led in scoring by Simon Moriarty with 13 points, Garrett Raby with 11 points, and Tyler Parsons with nine points.
