Harriman Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 6598 recently completed its three programs in connection with area schools.
Entry forms for Patriots Pen, Voice of Democracy and The Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teachers Award.
Patriots Pen is a patriotic essay-writing contest for students in grades 6-8.
This year’s winners are Elijah P. Charles of Oliver Springs Middle School, first place; Rebecca F. Michaud of Midway Middle School, second place; and Christina Frunza of Rockwood Middle School, third place.
Voice of Democracy is a patriotic audio essay competition for students in grades 9-12.
Midway High School’s Aaron M. Woody won first place in this contest. Second place was awarded to Ryan L. Hamby of Rockwood High School.
The Smart/Maher VFW National Citizenship Education Teachers Award is open to teachers in elementary, middle and high schools.
This year’s winners are Karen Parkinson of Midway High School and Mary Nipper of Oliver Springs Middle School.
Harriman VFW Post 6598 Commander Jim Irving said he and members of the VFW Post congratulate the winners and thank everyone who provided an entry to these programs.
Each winner received a certificate and a check from the post.
The presentations were made at each winner’s school.
