A trip to Germany will give Roane County’s top industrial recruiter the chance to network with Volkswagen, which is building a plant in Chattanooga.

Roane Alliance president Leslie Henderson will be heading to Europe this month as part of a trade delegation with Gov. Phil Bredesen.

Roane is trying to lure companies that supply the automobile industry and are expected to locate in areas around the factory.

“Volkswagen is arranging for its suppliers in Germany to attend the meetings we’re going to be at,” Henderson said.

She said 40 delegates from Tennessee will be in Germany Oct. 22-28.

The county falls within a 100-mile radius favored by suppliers to locate Volkswagen.

The German-based automotive company announced in July it plans to invest $1 billion in the plant.

Suppliers are expected to flock to the area as a result.

“We’ve got five sites we’ve already pitched to the state for potential locations for suppliers that are going to be supplying the new plant in Chattanooga,” Henderson said.

Henderson said the cost of the trip is around $9,000.

Knoxville-Oak Ridge Innovation Valley Inc. has said it will match the cost of the trip with any agency partner that is sending a delegate.

“There isn’t any investment I’d say more likely to bring a return than this one,” Henderson said.
