Despite having to fight off a furious fourth period rally by the Harriman Middle School Lady Devils, the Cherokee Lady Jackets escaped with a 29-26 victory Tuesday night.
Cherokee took a 5-2 advantage in the opening period before stretching the margin out to 14-9 going to halftime. Cherokee then extended their lead to 24-16 at the end of the third period, but the Lady Devils refused to quit and even tied the game at one point 26-26 with a 10-2 run.
Cherokee, however, scored the last three points of the game to take the 29-26 victory.
Cherokee had a 29-19 advantage on the boards and a 13-7 advantage in team steals.
The Lady Jackets were led in scoring by Sydney Nunley (13 points, 12 boards), Tori Strahan (9 points) and Kalli Sampson (5 points, 5 steals). Rachel Lowe (6 boards) and Taylor Thurman (5 boards) also played well in the victory.
Harriman was led in scoring by Kierra Turner (6 points) and Abby Higgins (6 points).

The Blue Devils put a hex on Cherokee en route to a 34-28 win.
Harriman took an early 9-6 lead in the opening period and added a couple of points to the lead to make the score 18-13 at halftime. Harriman got out to an 11-4 tilt to start the third period until the Jackets scored the last three points of that stanza to make the score 29-20 going into the final period. Cherokee managed to whittle the final deficit to 34-28 to give Harriman the win.
Harriman edged the Jackets on the boards, 25-23, but lost in team steals, 8-6.
Harriman was led in scoring by Dwight Farmer (10 points, 9 boards, Christian Upton (7 points), Grant Jenkins (7 points), and Jacob Gresham (7 points).
Cherokee was led in scoring by Brandon Donathan (9 points, 8 boards), and Tyler Hughes (7 points, 5 steals).
