Basketball season tipped off Monday evening as the Rockwood Middle School Tigers and Lady Tigers picked up opening round victories in the 2013 Hollis Eble Tournament at Oakdale.

Neither team was seriously threatened as the Tigers boys opened the evening with a 65-39 victory over Sunbright. The Lady Tigers finished the evening with a 51-27 victory over Petros-Joyner.

The boys bracket is a double-elimination bracket and the Tigers advanced to play on Thursday against the winner of Tuesday’s game between Oakdale and York in the winner’s bracket. The girls are playing a single-elimination bracket and Rockwood played York Tuesday in a semifinal contest.

Boys Game

Rockwood overwhelmed Sunbright Monday evening with a full court trapping defense and the result was an easy 26-point victory.

The Tigers did struggle a bit in the early going, but would still lead 14-4 after one period of play.

The trio of Colton Nuckols, Ryan McCain and Trey Treadway led the way for Rockwood with four points each in the opening period.

Rockwood’s depth allowed Jeff Allen’s squad to add seven points to their lead in the second period. Seven different Tigers scored in the frame as Rockwood led 35-18 at halftime.

Jackson Hicks scored five points for Rockwood in the second quarter while McCain and Treadway added four apiece.

Any hopes of a Sunbright comeback were crushed in the third quarter as Rockwood dominated the frame. Rockwood outscored Sunbright 20-2 in the stanza to make the score 55-20 with six minutes left to play.

Colby Robbins (7 points) and Zander Price (5 points) paced Rockwood in the third period.

Sunbright did have a big final period, outscoring Rockwood 19-10 to make the final score 65-39.

Treadway (12 points, 6 rebounds), McCain (10 points, 9 rebounds, 5 steals), Robbins (9 points, 7 rebounds), Hicks (7 points, 11 steals), Price (7 points, 6 rebounds) and Nuckols (7 points) all put up solid numbers for Rockwood in the win.

Sunbright’s Wesley Bohanan led all scorers with 16 points and six rebounds. Drent Brown (10 points, 4 rebounds, 4 assists, 3 steals) and Hunter Bunch (8 points, 4 steals) played well for Sunbright.

The girls game played out much like the boys as the Lady Tigers never trailed in rolling to a 24-point victory.

The inside duo of Cassidy Tilley (5 points) and Karlee Bowling (4 points) controlled the paint early in leading Rockwood to a 12-4 lead after six minutes of play.

Tilley (6 points) and Bowling (4 points) were at it again in the second period as Rockwood outscored the Lady Patriots 19-7 in the frame to make the score 31-11 at halftime.
