The Roane State Raiders baseball team got off to a great start in their 3-game series with the Cleveland State Cougars over the weekend, winning the first game of the set, 17-2, but Cleveland State rebounded nicely to take game two, 7-2, and game three, 7-4.

Game One

Roane State scored 11 runs in the bottom of the first inning Saturday and never looked back in thumping the Cougars, 17-2.

The big first inning was capped by a big blast, a grand slam home run off the bat of Andrew Henson.

Lance Mays and Landon Byron drove in two runs each in the frame as the Raiders put the game away early. Mays’ RBIs came on a triple.

The Raiders stayed hot in the second and third innings as three runs crossed the plate in both at bats to make the score 17-0 at the time.

Derek Basler and Logan Jenkins drove in runs in the second inning while Jenkins and Bryon picked RBIs in the third inning.

Cleveland State would score singles runs in the fourth and fifth innings, but it wouldn’t matter as the damage had already been done.

Byron (2-3, 3 RBIs, 3 runs), Aaron Fielden (2-4, 2 2Bs, 1 RBI, 2 runs), Jenkins (2-2, 3 RBIs, 1 run), JT O’Reel (2-3, 1 RBI, 3 runs), Basler (2-3, 2 RBIs, 2 runs), Mays (2-2, 1 3B, 2 RBIs, 1 run) and Henson (2-3, 1 GS, 4 RBIs, 2 runs) all had multiple hits on the day for the Raiders.

Jordan Copeland picked up the win on the mound after firing a complete-game, 5-hitter past the Cougars.

Game Two

Roane State nearly picked up a doubleheader sweep on Saturday, but a rough fifth inning cost the Raiders in a 7-2 setback.

The Raiders did take an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the third inning. Jenkins singled with two outs and scored on a single from Henson.

The lead stood until the top of the fifth inning when Cleveland State parlayed four hits and five walks to scored six runs to take a 5-run lead.

Both teams scored a single run in the seventh inning to make the final score 7-2.

Logan Fleener singled and scored Roane State’s run with Jenkins picking up the RBI.

Jenkins (2-3, 1 RBI, 1 run) and Byron (2-3) had multiple hits for Roane State in game two.

Game Three

Sunday’s finale played out much like game two as the Raiders scored first, but could not hang on for the win.

Roane State’s only lead of the contest came in the first inning when Jenkins and Basler crossed the plate on a double from Henson.

Nothing changed until the fourth inning when Cleveland State opened the inning with three straight hits, and all three would come around to score to make the score 3-2.

The fifth inning opened with Cleveland State’s Jammer Strickland hitting a home run then the Cougars added another run to make the score 5-2.

Cleveland State scored again in the top of the seventh inning to make the score 6-2, but Roane State got that run back in the bottom of the frame.

Mays walked and scored on a Jenkins single for Roane State’s run.

Roane State’s final run came in the bottom of the ninth inning when Jenkins drove in Colby Fleener with a ground out.

O’Reel (2-4) was the only Raider with multiple hits on the afternoon.

Roane State hits the road again this Friday and Saturday when they travel to Columbia State.
