Jackets shoot down Jets

The Kingston Lady Yellow Jackets got a little payback Friday evening when they held on for a 54-51 win over Cumberland County.
The Lady Jackets lost by 10 to the Lady Jets one week before at Cumberland County.
In the nightcap, the Yellow Jackets got a sweep of Cumberland County with a 72-71 overtime decision. Kingston had beaten the Jets by five at Crossville last Friday.
The Yellow Jackets travel to Lenoir City Friday night in their final game before Christmas.
Girls Game
The Lady Jackets started slow, but began clicking in the second quarter to take a one point lead into halftime 24-23. After Kingston got the lead, they refused to give it up even though Cumberland County rallied in the fourth quarter.
Sydney Nunley (5 points) and Haley Cornellison were the only Lady Jackets to score in the first period.
Nunley and Harli-Blaine Oran rallied the Lady Jackets in the second period. Oran ripped two big treys while Nunley added a basket and three free throws. Taylor Thurman and Kalli Sampson also scored as Kingston took a 24-23 lead at intermission.
Kingston really put the pressure on in the third, winning it 15-8 to hold a 39-31 lead with eight minutes left to play.
Oran led Kingston in the period with five points while Nunley and Lauren Baggett scored four each.
Makenzie Iles rallied the Lady Jets in the fourth quarter. Iles drained two three-pointers and made four straight free throws to cut Kingston’s lead to one with less than a minute left to play.
But the Lady Jackets hung on and saved their best free throw shooting in the last two minutes. Kingston made 11 of 13 in the final period to preserve the three-point victory.
Nunley led Kingston on the night with 16 points while Iles scored 15 for the Lady Jets.

Boys Game
Kingston led for most of the game, but the Jackets needed a Jordan Huddleston free throw to send the game to overtime, and then the Jackets needed a basket from Quint Gasque with 10 seconds left to pick up the one point victory.
The Yellow Jackets came out blazing and led 20-17 at the end of one.
Brandon Griffis began a big night with a trey and basket in the opening quarter. Huddleston and Aaron Sampson added four points each in the opening quarter.
Griffis and Gasque kept the pressure on early in the second quarter when the Jackets built a 12-point lead. Griffis and Gasque combined for nine points in the frame, but Cumberland County rallied late to pull within 33-30 at halftime.
Kingston again built a substantial lead in the third, but Crossville rallied late again. Huddleston ripped a trey and scored a hoop. Griffis and Sampson scored four each, but the Jets used a pair of three-pointers from Dylan Qualls to pull within one at 48-47 with one period left to play.
Griffis opened the fourth quarter with seven points in helping Kingston build an eight-point lead with four minutes left, but Cumberland County rallied and took the lead before Huddleston hit a free throw with four seconds left to send the game to overtime, tied at 63.
The teams traded points in overtime before Qualls hit a pair of free tosses to put the Jets up by one 71-70 with 25 seconds left.
After a series of time outs, Gasque drove the lane and scored to give the Yellow Jackets a one point lead with 10 ticks left.
One more Cumberland County time out was followed by two misfires as Kingston had pulled of a nice season sweep of the AAA Jets.
Griffis led Kingston on the night with 25 points. Gasque (13 points) and Huddleston (12 points) also scored in double figures for the Jackets.
Qualls led all scorers with 27 points.
