Jackets split with Wartburg

Makisha Fuller quite possibly had the performance of her life for the Kingston Lady Jackets Monday night as her 25 points propelled her team to the 60-53 win over the Wartburg Central Lady Bulldogs. 

Kingston started off the game with a 6-2 lead before giving a 7-0 run to close out the opening period down 9-6. 

Wartburg then used a 10-2 tilt to stretch the lead to 19-8, but the Lady Jackets closed the half strong with a 12-5 run to trail going into the locker room 24-20.

The Lady Jackets came out in the second half madder than a wet yellow jacket, using runs of 11-4 and 11-6 to take a 42-34 lead going into the final period. 

The Lady Bulldogs got within two points in the final period, but Kingston pulled away late to give the team an impressive 60-53 victory. 

Kingston had a 31-21 tilt in rebounds and a 20-10 advantage in team steals. 

Kingston was led in scoring by Fuller (25 points, 6 boards), Brooke Smith (10 points, 8 boards), Makayla Cordell (8 points, 6 assists, 5 steals), and Mica Gaines (7 points, 7 boards). 

Mollie Eason also had six assists in the win. 

Wartburg Central was led in scoring by Sarah Davidson (24 points, 8 boards), Kellie Kidd (9 points, 5 boards), and Kristie Phillips (9 points, 5 assists). 

Ashley McPeters (6 assists) and Destiney Massengale (5 boards) also played well in the loss.

For three periods of play, the Yellow Jackets had the Wartburg Central Bulldogs on the ropes, but Kingston ran out of gas in the final period to drop an 80-66 decision Monday night. 

Wartburg used a 9-2 run in the opening period to help lift them to a 17-11 first period lead. One highlight in the opening period was a thunderous alley oop dunk by sophomore sensation Alex Fountain for the Bulldogs. 

Kingston, however, poured on the offensive fireworks in the second period with 27 points, including a 16-5 run at one point to take a 38-34 half-time lead. 

Wartburg used a 10-1 run to take the lead in the third period at 44-39, but Kingston used an 11-6 run to tie the game at the end of the third period at 50-50. 

Wartburg used the final period to pull away with 30 fourth-period points, including a 13-3 run down the stretch to take the 80-66 triumph. 

Wartburg had a 39-37 edge in rebounds and a 10-9 edge in team steals. 

Wartburg was led on offense by Zach Shannon (21 points,9 boards), Brad Richardson (18 points), Cody Goodman (16 points, 13 boards), and Alex Fountain (11 points, 11 boards) along with Jordan Hamby (7 points).

Kingston was led in scoring by Aaron Fielden (15 points, 6 boards), Jordan Huddleston (14 points, 15 boards), Darrin Mossing (12 points, 9 assists, 7 rebounds), Lucas Clower (10 points, 6 boards), and Robbie Szozda (10 points, 5 assists).

The Jackets and Lady Jackets will play again Thursday when they host Oliver Springs.

Wartburg will take on another Roane County opponent Friday night when they host Harriman.
