What was supposed to be a blowout turned into a major upset Tuesday night as Colt Narramore’s Kingston Yellow Jackets picked up its first District 4-AA win of the season with a stunning 63-60 victory over district-leading Alcoa.
Kingston entered Tuesday’s contest with a 0-6 mark in district play, including a 78-44 shellacking at the hands of Alcoa earlier this season. Kingston, however, put together its best performance of the season in upsetting the Tornadoes.
Kingston trailed early on by a 10-8 margin before a 9-3 swing by the Tornadoes caused the first period to end at 19-11 in favor of Alcoa.
Quint Gasque (7 points) led the Jackets in scoring in the first period.
Alcoa led by 30-20 at one point in the second period, but that’s when momentum shifted in favor of the Jackets with an 11-4 run. Brandon Anderson scored four points in the run as Kingston pulled to within 34-31 at halftime.
The Jackets swarmed to life in the third period, starting with a 14-4 run to take a 45-38 lead before Alcoa scored the last four points of the third period to pull within 45-42 with one quarter left to play.
Tyler Hughes and Anderson (4 points each) led the Jackets in scoring in the third period.
Alcoa responded and would get out to a 59-58 lead in the final period. That’s when Kingston needed to get a big play and they got it in the form of a three-bomb by Hughes that detonated with 16.1 seconds left in the game to give the Jackets a 61-59 lead.
Alcoa managed to get within 61-60, but two free throws by Aaron Sampson with 3.9 seconds left put the 63-60 victory on ice.
Four Jackets got into double-figures in scoring as Gasque (16 points), Hughes (15 points), Sampson (13 points, 5 boards) and Anderson (12 points, 8 boards) led the Jackets to the big district win.
Kingston (63) Gasque 16, Hughes 15, Sampson 13, Anderson 12, Cash 4, Thompson 3.
The Lady Tornadoes came in like a wrecking ball and picked up the 60-45 win over the Lady Jackets in the first game of the evening.
Alcoa got out to the early 13-4 lead before eventually cruising to a 15-7 lead at the end of the first period. Alcoa’s lead ballooned to 26-11 lead at one point in the second period before taking a 32-18 halftime lead.
Rachel Layne (4 points) led the Lady Jackets in the second period in scoring.
The Lady Jackets pulled within 36-25 at the end of the third period and got within 38-29 at one stretch thanks to four straight points from Layne, but the Lady Jackets couldn't draw any closer as the Lady Tornadoes closed the game on a 9-4 swing to take the eventual 60-45 win.
Kalli Sampson (14 points), Layne (10 points, 5 boards), Taylor Thurman (7 points) and Lauren Baggett (8 boards) all put up solid numbers in the loss.
Kingston (45) Sampson 14, Layne 10, Thurman 7, R. Baggett 4, Strahan 4, L. Baggett 3, Lunsford 3.
