Jackets struggle with Alcoa

-A A +A
By Goose Lindsay, Sports Editor

Friday night was a tough night for the Kingston Yellow Jackets and Lady Jackets as Alcoa came to town and took a pair of District 4-AA games from the home team.

The first game of the night was a nail-biter as Alcoa held off the Lady Jackets, 44-41.

There would be no drama in the second game as the Tornadoes rolled to a 70-53 victory.

Girls Game

Once again the Lady Jackets came close to pulling an upset in District 4-AA play, but in the end they came up just short.

The Lady Jackets did lead 11-9 after eight minutes of play as Christina Neal and Makisha Fuller scored four points each while Makayla Cordell buried a trey.

Kingston, however, scored just three points in the second quarter as Alcoa outscored the Lady Jackets 13-3 in the period to take a 22-14 lead at halftime.

Kingston rebounded in the third quarter and would be back in the game by halftime. Led by five points from Fuller and four from Haley Cornellison, Kingston outscored the Lady Tornadoes 17-10 in the frame and trailed just 32-31 entering the fourth period of play.

Kingston, however, couldn't complete the comeback as Alcoa held on for the three-point victory.

Fuller (12 points) and Cornellison (10 points) scored in double figures for Kingston while Alcoa's Kayla Newman scored a game-high 13 points.

Kingston (41) Pankey 1, Fuller 12, Gaines 4, Oran 2, Cornellison 10, Eason 1, Neal 4, Mossing 2, Cordell 5.

Boys Game

There would be no nail-biting in the second game of the night as Alcoa jumped out to a big lead early and cruised to a 70-53 victory.

Alcoa started fast, racing out to a 21-11 lead after eight minutes of play. Kingston did play better in the second period as both teams scored 15 points, but that still left the Jackets in a 10-point hole, 36-26, at halftime.

Aaron Fielden (10 points) and Jordan Huddleston (8 points) did most of the damage for Kingston in the first half as they combined for 18 of the team's 26 points.

Any thoughts of a Kingston comeback pretty much came to an end in the third period as the Tornadoes won the frame 19-14 to take a 55-40 lead into the final period of play.

Huddleston and Lucas Clower scored five points each for the Jackets in the third period.

The final period would see Alcoa add two more points to their lead, making the final score 70-53.

Huddleston (17 points) and Fielden (12 points) scored in double digits on the night for Kingston.

Kingston (53) Huddleston 17, Mossing 4, Clower 5, Fielden 12, Basler 6, Jones 2, Griffis 4, Boles 3.
