Charlotte Melinda Beard

Charlotte Melinda Beard, 57, of Kingston, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2008, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

Born April 23, 1950, she was raised in the Swan Pond area of Harriman. She was loved and respected by all of her family and friends. An avid reader, she enjoyed quilting, gardening and listening to George Jones music. She loved spending time and doing activities with her grandchildren and family.

She was preceded in death by father and mother, William Houston Beard and Etta Rose Beard; brother and sister-in-law, Robert F. Beard and Carol Beard; sisters, Elizabeth Watts and Jeannie Beard; sister-in-law, Betty Beard; and niece Rose Marie Fairbanks.

Survivors include daughter and son-in-law, Melinda and Larry Johnson of Kingston; life mate of 30 years, Rich-ard G. DiVia of Kingston; grandchildren, Richard Lick

III, Glenn W. Johnson, Douglas Guynn and Kevin Guynn, all of Kingston, and Laura and Evin Cronin of Pennsylvania; sisters, Della Wallace and Sherry King, both of Harriman, Winnie Gale Lively of Rockwood and Robin “Penny” Gann of Lenoir City; brothers, Jim Beard and

Arvis Beard, both of Harriman; and a host of nieces and nephews

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, in Kyker Funeral Home, Harriman. Funeral service will follow in the chapel, with the Rev. Eddie Schubert officiating. Graveside service and burial will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, at Swan Pond Baptist Church Cemetery, Harriman.

Katherine “Kate” Brummitt

Katherine “Kate” Brummitt, 93, of Kingston, died Wednesday, Jan. 23, 2008, in Harriman Care and Rehabilitation Center.

She was a member of Foursquare Gospel Church.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Albert “Mann” Brummitt.

Survivors include sisters, Peggy Miles and Pauline Bracket, both of Kingston; brother, John Herrell of Maryville; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral service was at 7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, in Kyker Funeral Home chapel, Kingston, with the Rev. Chris Stickrod and the Rev. Ottis Ball officiating. Graveside service and burial will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 25, at Mars Hill Cemetery, Kingston.

Virgil ‘Ray’ Collette

Virgil “Ray” Collette, 54, of Rockwood, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008, in Rockwood Care and Rehabilitation Center.

A dedicated member of Grace Church, Rockwood, he was an avid fan of the University of Tennessee Volunteers and the Rockwood Tigers.

He was preceded in death by parents, Millard Arnold Collette and Ruthie Mae Peterman; and sister, Evaline Wicks.

Survivors include sisters and brothers-in-law, Carolyn and Jerry Cooper, Elene and David Goney, Shirley Russell and Mary Cunningham, all of Rockwood; a host of nieces and nephews, including Alicia Goney and Isaiah Goney, both of Kingston, and cousins.

The family will receive friends from noon to 2 p.m. Friday, Jan. 25, in Evans Mortuary, Rockwood. Graveside service and burial will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery, Rockwood, with the Rev. Doyle Bowen officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Evans Mortuary to defray funeral expenses.

Jeff E. Franklin

Jeff E. Franklin, 44, of Huber Heights, Ohio, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008, at his home.

Born March 30, 1963, in Harriman, he was the son of Ralph E. and Linda Bullard Franklin. A 1980 graduate of Springfield South High School and Clark Joint Vocational School in Ohio, he had been a welder with Honda since 1987. An avid NASCAR fan, he enjoyed fishing, wrestling, football and his 1969 Camaro. He will be remembered as a caring and loving husband, son, father and grandfather and will be sadly missed by everyone who knew and loved him.

He was preceded in death by sister, Wendy Franklin, in 1974.

In addition to his parents, survivors include his wife of one year, Becki Balser Franklin; daughters and son-in-law, Candace Franklin of Springfield, Ohio, Lesley and Steve Bowers of New Carlisle, Ohio, Jacki Haddix and Cera Haddix, both of Huber Heights; son and daughter-in-law, Jeffery Keith and Stephanie Franklin of Dayton, Ohio; grandchildren, Kaitlyn Means, Keirsten Means, Shaynne Thompson, Tyler Beverly, Kyleah Beverly, Hailey Haddix Steven III and Emerald Bowers; and friend whom he loved as a brother, Mark Jenkins of Springfield.

Funeral service will be Friday, Jan. 25, in Ohio. The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 27, in Evans Mortuary, Rock-wood. Graveside service and burial will will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery, Rockwood.

Linda Ann Ballard Petersen

Linda Ann Ballard Petersen, formerly of Spring City, died Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2008, at her home.

Born in Fort Oglethorpe, Ga., she was the daughter of Albert William and Barbara Jean Whitmire Ballard, both of whom preceded her in death. She was retired from Boeing Aeronautics and was of the Baptist faith.

Survivors include her husband, Robert F. Petersen of Harriman; daughter and son-in-law, Joy and Mark Hufstetler of Spring City; sons and daughters-in-law, Bobby Jr. and Sharon Petersen of Knoxville, Randy and Delores Petersen, Larry Petersen and Mark and Sabrina Petersen, all of Spring City, David and Christa Peterson of Harriman and Johnny and Shannon Petersen of Cleveland; sister and brother-in-law, Leslie Jean and O.C. Fowler of Savannah, Ga.; 12 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and special friend and nurse, Sharon Robinett of Athens.

Memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 26, in Vaughn Funeral Home chapel, Spring City, with the Rev. Tony Spencer officiating.

John Milroy Theiss

John Milroy Theiss, 79, of Kingston, formerly of Fayetteville and Tullahoma, died Monday, Jan. 21, 2008.

A member of Kingston Church of Christ and a former member of Stateline Church of Christ, Fayetteville, he was a U.S. Army veteran of the Korean conflict and a NASA retiree with more than 40 years of service. He grew beautiful roses that he enjoyed sharing with others.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Edna Earl Bobo Theiss, on July 6, 1996.

Survivors include son, Timothy John “Bent” Theiss of Kingston; daughter, Tina Jan Theiss of Madison, Ala.; grandchildren, Corey Stewart Theiss, Elizabeth Lacey Theiss and John Cothron Theiss, all of Kingston; brother, Roy Stoddard Theiss of Mobile, Ala.; and sister-in-law, Carolyn Bobo of Tullahoma.

Funeral service was at 10 a.m. CST Wednesday, Jan. 23, in Higgins Funeral Home, Fayetteville, with Bro. John Payne officiating. Graveside service and burial were at Cedar Hills Memorial Gardens, Fayetteville. A memorial service was from 6 to 7:30 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 24, in Kingston Church of Christ.
