Jay E. Wood, 91, of Dayton, died Monday, May 7, 2012, in Etowah Health Center.
Born in Cocke County, he was the son of the late Horace D. and Bessie Poe Wood. He moved to Rhea County from Greene County in 1952. He was retired from TVA. He was also a farmer and an evangelist. He served in the U.S. Navy in World War II on the USS Weber. He was a member of Liberty Baptist Church in Kingston.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty Hillard Wood; three children, James and David Wood and Brenda Creason England; two grandchildren, Cindy Creason and Angela Wood; and several siblings.
Survivors include four children J. Edgar and Joseph Daniel Wood, both of Dayton, Freda Arlene Whelan, Greeneville, and Barbara Turner, Kingston; six sisters, Sue Wood, Mary Wood, Dorothy Seaton, Marjorie Craig and Audrey Payne, all of Greeneville; a brother, James Wood, Mosheim; several nieces and nephews.
Funeral services were at 11 a.m. Thursday, May 10, in Vaughn Funeral Home chapel, Spring City, with the Rev. Randy Griffis officiating. Burial followed at Spring City Memorial Gardens. The family received friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday in Vaughn Funeral Home.
