Joan Frisbee, 89, a native of South Harriman, passed away Wednesday, Sept. 1, 2010, in The Bridge at Rockwood after a period of declining health.
She attended South Harriman High School 1927-1940, graduating academically at the head of her class. She attended Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, where she completed a major in accounting, with minors in French and economics, graduating magna cum laude. In 1950, she received a master’s degree in business administration from University of Tennessee. In 1970, she completed her doctorate from the University of Tennessee. She took a position teaching at Carson-Newman College, Jefferson City, where she taught for 26 years in the business department. An associate professor emeritus, she retired in 1984.
She loved sports, especially Atlanta Braves baseball games and college football games. She loved to travel. Before the time of expressways, she and two friends made a three-week motor trip to California. She had also made two tours of the British Isles in 1979 and 1983.
She was a devoted daughter to her mother, and a dear friend to her many associates at Carson-Newman College.
She was preceded in death by her parents, O.J. and Ona R. Frisbee; three brothers, Oliver, Thomas and Kline Frisbee; four sisters, Geneva F. Renfro, Gertrude F. VanZandt and Grace F. Roberts; and a baby sister, Maxine.
Survivors include five nephews, Ronald Frisbee, Danny Frisbee, Bobby Renfro, Gerald VanZandt and Michael Frisbee; five nieces, Jane R. Alford, Brenda V. Turner, Hope R. Gibson, Susan VanZandt and Teresa V. Stark; 12 great-nephews; three great nieces; several great-greatnieces and great-great-nephews; a special childhood friend, Wilene W. Morgan, and a special caregiver, Tracy Gibson.
The family will receive friends from 3 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 5, in Kyker Funeral Home, Harriman. Funeral service will follow in the chapel, with the Rev. Gene Nelson, Dan Cooley and Ted Taylor officiating. Burial will be at 5 p.m. at Willard Park Cemetery.
