-A A +A

Dr. John Chandler “Jack” Hume Jr., 73, died Wednesday, Dec. 22, 2010, at his home.

Born June 6, 1937, in Nashville, he was the son of Dr. John C. Hume and Amelia Brown Hume, both of whom preceded him in death. A disabled veteran, he retired in June 2002 from St. Mary’s College, Raleigh, N.C., where he had been employed since receiving his Ph.D. in history from Duke University in Durham, N.C. During his tenure at St. Mary’s, he held positions of professor, department chair, dean of faculty and president of the college. He and his wife, Anita, moved to Roane County upon her retirement to be close to family.

One of the things he will be best remembered for is the number of lives he touched and the people he helped through his teaching at St. Mary’s. He felt the impact he had on his students’ lives was one of his greatest accomplishments.

Survivors include his wife, Anita Hyatt Hume, Oliver Springs; their son, William Gordon Hume; three children from a former marriage, John Allen Hume, Elizabeth Hume and David Edward Hume; a brother, William P. Hume; a sister, Susan Hume Artes; grandchildren; many nieces and nephews.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 28, in Grace Community Church, Kingston. A family graveside service will be in Roane County. Jackson Funeral Services, Oliver Springs, is in charge of arrangements.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations to St. Mary’s School Scholarship Fund, 900 Hillsborough St., Raleigh, NC 27603.
