Oliver Springs junior Courtney Jones wasn’t just good in Thursday evening’s match-up against Rockwood, she was perfect as the right-handed ace tossed a perfect game with 14 strikeouts in leading the Lady ’Cats to a 9-0 victory over the Lady Tigers at Arrowhead Park.

Jones’ teammates provided plenty of offense in the first three innings as that’s when Oliver Springs scored all of its nine runs.

The Lady ’Cats batted around and scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning.

Emily Griffith singled and Chelsey Roy walked to start the game and both scored on a single from Jones. Hope Jenkins (walk) and Rachel Griffith (singled) reached later in the inning to load the bases before Sarah Channell brought in a run with a walk.

Oliver Springs added four runs to its lead in the second inning.

The Lady ’Cats had just one hit in the frame, but it was a big one as Rachel Griffith hit a screaming line drive to left field that turned into an inside-the-park grand slam home run after Lady Tiger left fielder Chelsey Johnson narrowly missed making a great diving catch.

Emily Griffith, Jones and Chelsey Roy had walked earlier in the inning and were on board when Rachel Griffith sprinted around the bases.

Oliver Springs scored its final two runs in the bottom of the third inning.

Emily Griffith walked and scored the first run on a single from her sister, Rachel. Jones reached on an error and scored the second run on an RBI ground out from Breanna Phillips.

Oliver Springs would not score again, but the nine-run lead was more than enough with Jones retiring 21 straight Lady Tigers.

Rachel Griffith (3-3, GS, 5 RBIs, 1 run) led Oliver Springs on offense.

Both teams return to action Monday when they host district games. Oliver Springs hosts Wartburg in a District 4-A contest while Rockwood takes on Midway at home in a District 3-A battle.
