Circuit Court Clerk Kim Nelson has resigned her seat on the Roane County Board of Education. Nelson was elected circuit clerk in August. She was elected to the school board in 2008, and still had two years remaining on a four-year term.

Nelson was sworn in as circuit clerk Wednesday morning at the courthouse. Her reason for resigning from the school board was explained in a statement she passed out.

“As I stated before, I had requested guidance from the State Attorney General's Office on this issue and they directed me to an opinion where that office interprets the law as requiring me to give up the school board seat once I am sworn into office as the clerk,” the statement read. “Obviously, I will follow the recommendation of the State Attorney General and I have already submitted my resignation from the school board, effective Aug. 31.”

The county commission will select someone to replace Nelson on the school board.
