The city of Kingston knows how to defuse some of the stress that comes with budget season.

After the department heads have done their work and everything is ready for the City Council to go over, a May budget workshop is scheduled.

On that day, the fire department cooks up a huge lunch — beef, chicken, salad, cheesecake — and city officials and city employees all break bread together.

Even with the lunchtime merriment, the process can be trying, especially in today's tough economic times.
