Kingston takes two from Midway

The Roane County High School gymnasium was rocking Friday night as Midway rode into town to finish the season series with the Yellow Jackets.

Midway took both the girls and boys games in December against Kingston, but the Yellow Jackets and Lady Jackets were up to the task Friday night, winning both games to split the season series.

The Lady Jackets used some timely free-throw shooting late in the game to get a 57-51 win while Kingston pulled away for a 67-55 win over the Green Wave in the final game of the evening.

Girls Game

The Lady Jackets and Lady Waves game was tight throughout the first half. 

Kingston led by one 13-12 at the end of the first quarter. 

A pair of baskets from Tori Strahan and a trey from Kaylee Wilson paced Kingston in the quarter while Abby Bertram fired in three hoops to lead Midway in the period.

The second quarter was back and forth with each team holding small leads. Kingston did manage to hold a one point lead by halftime, 25-24. 

Kingston’s Kalli Sampson burned the nets with two 3-pointers and Strahan added two hoops to give the Lady Jackets the slim halftime advantage.

Bertram again led Midway with two baskets while Rachael Tuttle and Juilee Kilby each knocked down a 3-pointer.

Kingston's Rachael Layne scored two hoops and sank four free throws in the third to help the Lady Jackets grab an 8-point lead late in the frame. 

Strahan scored twice more and Sampson added another trey.

Bertram scored six for Midway on two 3-point plays. Lexi Taylor added four points to keep Midway close at 40-34 by the end of the period.

Midway closed to within two behind baskets from Bertram and Taylor to begin the fourth quarter. 

The game stayed tight till the two-minute mark when Layne stepped outside and nailed a trey to give Kingston a 4-point lead.

Bertram kept Midway close scoring two baskets around a free throw from Layne.

At 51-50, Midway came up empty on several shots while Sampson was knocking down 6-of-8 free throws to help Kingston pull away for the 57-51 win.

Boys Game

Midway led 17-12 at the first stop, but Kingston rallied to grab a 36-30 lead at halftime. The Jackets maintained the lead till the fourth quarter when they hit 13 free throws to pull away for the 12-point win.

Midway’s two big scorers did just that in the first period. Shandon Lyle gunned eight points and Jacob Cawood added seven to put the Green Wave up 17-12 at the end of eight minutes of play.

Kingston started slow, but got a trey and hoop from Tyler Hughes in the quarter as well as a trey from Marcus Hutson.

The Jackets rallied in the second period behind a pair of 3-pointers from Hughes and three baskets from Aaron Sampson. Quint Gasque added five points as Kingston would take a 36-30 lead into halftime.

Cawood and Lyle combined for nine of Midway’s 13 points in the second quarter.

Sampson was blazing hot for Kingston in  the third with a trey and two hoops. 

Midway did trim a point off the lead in the frame. Christian Moore gunned in seven points while Lyle and Justin Dutton combined for seven more.

The Yellow Jackets hit only two field goals in the fourth quarter, but they did hit 13 free throws. Hughes led the charity stripe charge with six. He also hit a 3-pointer in the frame.
