If Tuesday’s season opener is any indicator then the Oliver Springs softball team could be on their way to a good season, as Matt Headden’s squad downed Rockwood, 9-1, at the Mike “Brillo” Miller Sports Complex in Rockwood.
“Not bad for the first day,” Headden said following the victory. “We’ve still got a long way to go, but for our first time out we did pretty good. We’ve practically got a new team this year. We have a lot of new faces this year and the older ones are in other positions plus we haven’t had a lot of time together so far.”
Oliver Springs never trailed Tuesday and scored all of their runs in the third and fourth innings.
Five of those runs came in the third inning as the Lady ‘Cats strung together six hits in the frame.
Emily Griffith got things started with a single to left then CharLee Roberts beat out a bunt single. Courtney Jones followed with an RBI double and Kaylee Morgan had a two-run single to make the score 3-0. Rachel Griffith picked up Oliver Springs’ fifth straight hit of the inning then Raichel Snellings drove in a pair of runs with a two-out single.
The fourth inning opened with Chelsey Roy, Emily Griffith, Roberts and Jones all reaching in succession with Jones driving in two runs with a single. Morgan followed with an RBI ground out and Rachel Griffith capped the scoring with an RBI single that made the score 9-0.
The nine-run lead was more than enough for Lady ‘Cat ace Courtney Jones. Jones was perfect through three innings with seven strikeouts, but she did run into some trouble in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Lexi Monroe walked with one out to break up the perfect game. Monroe later scored when Kristen Isham picked up the Lady Tigers first hit of the game.
Darian Green also had a hit in the inning for Rockwood, but they could not keep the rally alive.
Monroe and Green also had hits for Rockwood in the bottom of the sixth inning, but neither would score.
Jones ended the day with a complete-game four-hitter with one walk and one hit batter while striking out 13.
Emily Griffith (2-4, 2 runs), CharLee Roberts (3-5, 2 runs), Jones (3-4, 2 2Bs, 3 RBIs, 2 runs) and Rachel Griffith (3-4, 1 RBI, 1 run) all had multiple hits for Oliver Springs in the victory.
Green (2-3) led the way for Rockwood in the loss.
Rockwood and Oliver Springs will both be in action this weekend in a tournament at Coalfield.
