In what amounted to a true cat-fight, it was the Oliver Springs Lady Bobcats escaping by the hair of their chinny-chin-chin over their in-county feline counterparts, the Rockwood Lady Tigers, by a 2-1 tally on Saturday afternoon in a tournament at Coalfield.
The Lady 'Cats struck first with a pair of runs coming in on wild pitches in the top of the first inning.
From the bottom of the first to the top of the fourth, Oliver Springs' Courtney Jones and Rockwood's Kristan Isham were engaged in a fierce pitcher's duel. There were intermittent walks by both teams, but no one was able to mount a true scoring charge until the bottom of the fourth inning when, in the final minutes of the game, the Lady Tigers got home a run on a fielder's choice to tie the game at 2-1. Rockwood had the potential go-ahead and winning runs on base when fate dealt them a cruel blow as time expired, giving the Lady 'Cats a potential stay of execution en route to the 2-1 win.
Emily Griffith and Tiffany Roberts had Oliver Springs' hits while Courtney Jones (CG, 9 Ks, 1 H, 2 walks, 1 ER) got the win.
Rockwood's lone hit came from Isham, who also had a strong showing on the mound in defeat (CG, 1 K, 2 H, 6 walks, 0 ER).
In other tournament action, the Lady 'Cats swept their Saturday games, slaying the Clinton Lady Dragons 8-2 and trapping the Grainger Lady Grizzlies 4-2.
Rockwood would blank Oneida 10-0 and Oakdale by a 9-0 score.
