Lady ’Cats edge Kingston, 3-1

Courtney Jones tossed a complete-game, four-hitter with one walk and 13 strikeouts Friday afternoon in leading the Oliver Springs Lady Bobcats to a 3-1 victory over Kingston in a game played at the 2014 Rockwood Invitational.

Kingston’s offense struggled against Jones all afternoon. The Lady Jackets went down in order in each of the first two innings with Jones recording five strikeouts.

Taryn Underwood tripled for Kingston’s first base runner in the third inning, but she would be left stranded at the end of the frame.

Briley Garrett singled and scored Kingston’s only run of the contest in the fourth inning. She singled again in the sixth inning, but wouldn’t advance past first base.

The Lady Jackets had a solid scoring chance in the fifth inning when Alex Aycock singled and Underwood walked with one out, but both runners would be left stranded at the end of the frame.

Oliver Springs took the lead for good with a run in the bottom of the first inning. Emily Griffith, Jones and Rachel Griffith all singled in the frame with Emily Griffith crossing the plate.

Emily Griffith scored Oliver Springs’ second run of the game in the third inning. She got things going with a double and scored quickly on a double from Chelsey Roy.

The Lady ’Cats scored their final run of the game in the bottom of the fourth inning. Haley Griffith led off the inning with a single and she scored on a triple from Tiffany Roberts.

Oliver Springs had one more base runner on the day when Hope Jenkins singled in the fifth inning.

Griffith (2-3, 2B, 2 runs) and Garrett (2-3, 1 run) were the only players on the day with multiple hits.
