For a half of basketball, the Harriman Lady Blue Devils had the District 4-A champion Wartburg Lady Bulldogs reeling on the proverbial ropes, gasping for air.

But in the second half, the Lady ‘Dogs outscored Harriman 37-10 to make the Wartburg fans, in the words of the great Phil Robertson, “happy, happy, happy” with a resounding 53-37 win Friday night in the first round of the Region 2-A Tournament.

Harriman took the early 4-3 lead, but the Lady ‘Dogs responded with an impressive 8-3 tilt, taking an 11-7 lead before the Lady Devils bounced back with an 8-0 run to close out the opening period with the 15-11 lead.

Jadah Gallaher (8 points) led Harriman’s offense while Nina Carter (5 points) led Wartburg offensively after one period of play.

Period number two was a 12-5 swing in momentum in favor of the Lady Devils, giving them the 27-16 halftime lead.

Gallaher (13 points) was pacing the Lady Devil offense while Madison Laughter (8 points) led the Lady ‘Dogs at the half. Laughter was the lone source of offense in what was otherwise an abysmal second period offensively for Wartburg.

The Lady ‘Dogs came out of the locker room barking and biting the Lady Devils every which way possible, rolling to an 18-3 tilt that gave Wartburg the 34-30 lead going into the final stanza.

Laughter (13 points) and Gallaher (16 points) led their respective offenses in scoring.

With scoring surges of 10-4 and 9-3 in the final stanza, the Lady ‘Dogs would cruise the rest of the way to the 53-37 win.

Wartburg had a 32-22 edge on the boards, and a 16-9 advantage in team steals.

Laughter (13 points, 8 boards), Kristie Phillips (11 points, 5 boards), Victoria Hamby (8 points, 7 boards, 7 steals), Nina Carter (8 points, 6 boards), and Haley Hurtt (8 points) all led the Wartburg scoring attack.

Harriman was led by Gallaher (16 points) and Madison Duncan (7 boards, 6 boards).

With the victory, Wartburg advanced to Monday’s Region 2-A semifinals and a contest against Oliver Springs. Monday’s game was played at Harriman.
